It's fair to say Dave Whelan has his finger in a lot pies - owner of Pooles of Wigan, chairman of Wigan Athletic and founder of sports enterprise JJB, he's a busy man.
That doesn't stop him from making sure his crusty meat and potato delights are up to scratch.
In fact, his renowned pie business has just been shortlisted for the sought-after Bakery Manufacturer of the Year award.

After watching him devour one of his pies – his factory makes 25,000 of these delicacies every hour – it is clear to see to why.
Wearing a hairnet and white overalls in his Pemberton pie mecca, Dave easily fitted in with his 50 employees who work tirelessly to keep the name Pooles of Wigan one of the country's best.

He said: "I was absolutely over the moon when I found out we had made the top three and to win it would be fantastic.
"As a former footballer I have always been a team player and that is how I run my businesses – we are all a team.

"The business is expanding rapidly and I am aiming to put another five or six million into it to make it the biggest and the best in the UK."
With the likes of supermarket giants Asda and Morrisons buying his produce, how does he manage to bake so many and keep them so tasty?

"It's all in the recipe, one that we have followed for over a century," he said.
"It is simple but unbeatable."
His bakery manager, Pauline Atherton, is also passionate about her pies.

whoever said that freedom of speech was dead ? judging by the amount of comments that get deleted on this site they are obviously correct, the truth can't stay buried forever as they say, even though there are those on here who don't believe the truth should be heard. j.j.broughton started a sports business giving it his initials (jjb) so how does that make dave whelan the founder ?

Someone needs to moderate the unsuitability requests and ban those that abuse its facility. The point of commenting is to add to the story - not limit it to the views of one or two sad individuals.
