A car passenger from Wigan cheated death after a train ploughed into his car on a level crossing.
The 23-year-old from Ashton was a passenger in a 4x4 driven by a work colleague from Skelmersdale when the collision happened.
The 31-year-old driver suffered serious chest, back and leg injuries but is now off the critical list. The younger man escaped with a broken ankle and bruising.
British Transport Police have launched an inquiry into the 50mph smash on Wednesday morning on the crossing – which has flashing lights but no barriers – in the Cumbrian town of Flookburgh near Grange-over-Sands.
There were 22 passengers on the 8.27am TransPennine Express from Manchester Airport to Barrow which crashed into the Land Rover Discovery.
None of them was injured and the train was not derailed, although its guard did attend hospital for an injured ankle.
A helicopter from the Great North Air Ambulance Service airlifted the stricken Land Rover driver to Lancaster Royal Infirmary.
His condition was said to be stable.
The Ashton passenger was taken by road ambulance to Furness General Hospital in Barrow and was discharged last night.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been informed of the 10.30am incident at the Wraysholme level crossing.
Network Rail spokesman Keith Lumley said initial findings did not point to a problem with the crossing.
He said: "From the preliminary tests, all the equipment at the level crossing was working fine."
The Desiro 185 train remained upright but the mangled wreck of the Land Rover ended up on the side of the track.
A woman living next to Wraysholme crossing told police she heard a bang as the vehicle and train collided.
The spokesman from First TransPennine said the driver of the train had been shaken up but did not suffer any injuries.
Passengers were evacuated to another train and taken to Ulverston.
The train was removed and the line reopened about four hours later.
