A disused bowling green cabin targeted by vandals for six years may finally be replaced.
Pensioners who regularly play bowls at the green in Platt Lane, Hindley, are furious that nothing has been done about the cabin which has become an eyesore.

One bowls player, Alfred Cook, 71, of Merefield Close, said: "It's been going on for more than six years. The council had planned to build a new cabin but now they are saying they don't know where the money is.

"It's not just me, it is all the pensioners in Hindley. We play on the bowling green and we can't even get into the cabin. It's boarded up – there are no toilets. Other clubs come two or three times a week and they say what a disgrace – we can't even make them a cup of tea.

"It's terrible – they make a kids' playground which costs a fortune but they wont do anything for pensioners."
But Wigan and Leisure Culture Trust (WLCT) insists it is doing everything it can to provide a replacement pavilion.

A spokesman said: "The trust has kept bowlers and elected members informed of the situation at Platt Lane through the Wigan Bowlers Forum and at meetings.

"We have also supported the bowlers in their attempts to secure grant funding from Awards for All to purchase a replacement pavilion, unfortunately this was turned down.

"The pavilion has been condemned and is awaiting demolition by the council. Before demolition can occur the water and electricity need to be disconnected. This work has been ordered and we are waiting for it to be completed.

"Once that has been carried out, a replacement building that suits the needs of the bowlers will be agreed with the council."
Ward councillor Jim Talbot has said the WLCT could supply a new cabin ready for next spring.
It is thought the new cabin would cost around £15,000.

Vandal target or not, it's a facility that is needed and should be supported. Anyone tried asking Camelot?

With scrap metal being the price it is, why not get rid of all those awful black bollards that are breeding around the town? There should be ample funds then to build a new clubhouse or whatever.

Jemmy, Why not join the council? Looks like the Village needs another idiot. So we dont provide facilities for communities because someone might vandalise them?
Its people like you who roll over and let these vandals win that has turned Britain into what it currently is.
Shame on you!

Cartman, it's the " heritage" look, along with a little notice board, and, if you are very lucky, a Pit-Tub on a plinth full of flowers. And it's coming to every town in the borough.
