It's a feat Wigan Warriors have yet to achieve but one of the borough's schools is heading for a dream Challenge Cup date at the new Wembley!
Year 7 pupils at Standish High school are jumping for joy after winning through to play in a curtain-raising game ahead of the Challenge Cup final in August.

They hammered Hull's Malet Lambert 30-6 in the semi final of the RFL National Carnegie Champion Schools Tournament.

Headteacher Hugh Crossan said: "We're so proud and delighted.
"We can't wait to go down and watch them play.

"We've had some outstanding sporting success here at Standish this year thanks to a fantastic PE department led by Ged Stazicker."

It means Standish High will go down in history as the first Wigan team from the town to play at the new Wembley Stadium.

Staff and players celebrated the win with a hearty slap-up breakfast at the school. Former rugby coach Coun George Fairhurst, who stepped in to donate Brighter Borough money to buy the youngsters a new kit, said: "I'm made up for the lads, the school and Standish.

"It's absolutely fantastic that a team from Standish will become the first from the borough to play at the new Wembley."

Donations for the new kit were also received from local firms Standish Engineering and Crown Shield Roofing.

Head of PE Ged Stazicker said: "It will be one of the most memorable and exciting days of their young lives."
