They sit around the town hall all day and drink coffee, go to meetings and talk a lot, and they are more interested in national politics than what's going on where their constituents live.
Those are just some of the popular views about the work of local councillors that Wigan Council is hoping to change during this year's Local Democracy Week.

Wigan Council says the truth about the work of elected members is far removed from these s
tereotypes.
In fact, the council says cou ncillors are all too often undervalued, undermined and misunderstood.

Wiganers are being offered the chance to meet and talk with elected members to find out more about their varied, demanding and vital role.
Local Democracy Week organiser Simon Dale said: "We want people to find out more about what their councillors do.

"Nationally, research suggests that lack of awareness about the role of local councillors is greater than ever, and it is this lack of knowledge that could be putting people off making the decision to stand up for their own community and become a local councillor."

The list of councillor's duties is exhaustive and they are hoping to use Local Democracy Week to banish the myths about how they spend their time for good.

Here are just some of the things local councillors get involved with:
Sorting out housing problems.
Improving the environment.
Championing the interests of their community.
Helping people have their say on planning applications.
Working with the police and other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour.

On Monday, the council will be hosting a series of "get to know your councillor" sessions and want as many people as possible to come along.

The events will take place between 6.30pm and 8pm at the following venues:
Golborne Linc Centre, Worsley Street, Golborne – Councis Myra Whiteside and Ged Bretherton will attend.
Ince Community Centre, Manchester Road, Ince – Couns Carl Sweeney, Keith Cunliffe and Brian Merry will attend.
The Queen's Methodist Hall Mission, Crompton Street, Wigan – Couns

Eunice Smethurst, Eddie Russon and Steve Dawber will attend.
Mr Dale said: "From making the big decisions on education, transport and the local economy through to sorting out problems over the garden fence, the remit of councillors is vast. They are involved in every sphere of life in the borough."

councillors get paid a lot of money for telling lies and doing very little work.they get paid more money than the ordinary working man and woman.

They spend a lot of time filling in their expenses claim sheets & travelling round the borough looking for Special Schools to sell off to developers.
Only in it to line their own pockets!

Councillors, the first line of defence for the heirarchy named Wigan council. They keep away joe public from direct contact with their masters, and get paid a LOT of money for doing so.

When the Councillors are,

Improving the environment.
Championing the interests of their community.
Helping people have their say on planning applications.
Working with the police and other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour.

They are sitting around talking alot about these topics with a drink and possibly a buffet. So people's veiw on them is right.

Typical comments.

The truth is, councillors do not get paid a wage, or a salary. They are not employed by the council.
They do get an accountable allowance to cover their expenses.
Gary Wilkes (Bryn) for example, works for the NHS Estates for a living.

Councillors are representatives of the people, not the council.

However, it's a fact that, once elected, many councillors forget that they are the representatives of the people and consider themselves 'on a higher plane'.

they are supposed to represent local people , but in reality they just toe their particular party line and do whatever they are told by party bosses, they all claim to have morals but claim is all it is , look at the asylum seekers , when the council first decided to house them in council property 'lord ' smith told us they had a moral duty to help these people (and the government) then a couple of years later they pulled out of the contract they had with nass with 'lord' smith telling us the cancelled it because there wasn't enough profit in it for them, where did his morals go then?. all these councillors are the same , they are all i n it for themselves and what they and their families can get out of it , i take my children to school along highfield grange avenue and every day the mayors car -(reg:- aek1) goes past doing a school run -is that a fit and proper use of council tax payers money? i think not so who benefits from that apart from whichever councillors children they happen to be , and it means their mum and dad are saving a fortune on petrol bills at our expense.
