Labour Party bosses are 'unlikely' to overturn plans to impose women-only candidates on Wigan's two parliamentary seats.
According to a national party source such an about-face would be very unusual.

He said: "The National Executive Committee will always listen to the views of constituency parties but it would be highly, highly unusual for such a decision to be overturned at this stage.
"In fact I have only known it once in the last 10 years."

Members of the Makerfield party have voted to reject the female shortlists three days after the Wigan party took the same decision.
The two MPs, Ian McCartney and Neil Turner, have both announced they will stand down at the next election.

A special constituency meeting attacked the party's national hierarchy for imposing the diktat designed to usher more women into the Commons.
More than 60 members attended the Makerfield meeting – three times the usual turnout.

Although there is no formal appeal procedure against the "no men" ban, members will be lobbying the NEC in the hope that they can persuade it to change its recommendation.

I can name a few female MP's, who should never have been elected, but, then, there are some male MP's, who have had to jump ship, to avoid being pushed.
Whether a candidat is Tory or Labour, if they are selectively chose on the basis of gender then that is contrary to the spirit of a democratic choice and points up the fact that present political system is controlled by people who aren't elected and aren't representative of the people that they purport to represent.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:-

If it was a male only shortlist, would it be sexist?, or does sexism only work one way, like all other forms of discrimination?

Hi Lomra Greener

Women only shortlists are sexist and discriminatory, just as male only shortlists would be.

A candidate should be the best person for the job.

But, as we all know, in the Labour Party that will never happen anyway as they are all yes men/women.

Best wishes
Peter Franzen

This whole thing stinks like yesterdays nappies! Being told that you can't vote for the person who is most likely to do his or her best for the people who actually live in the area they are being voted to represent. It's the residents of the area involved who have to put up with the lack of deliverance of promises in the manifesto, surely the vote should be by representatives of the area and not someone who may not have even been to Wigan to dictate to us who can be voted for. This is supposed to be a democratic society but this is blatently undermining the whole system by limiting the choice of candidate. Emily Pankhurst dedicated her life to get women thier vote in a democratic society and now it looks like women are being pushed into parliament just because 'they' say they haven't got enough women in the house. I know the interior decor of the houses of parliament are a bit boring, that's possibly why you see so many MP's asleep there! No need to redress the houses with eye candy for the old school tie public school boys though. I would like to see more women in politics, both at local level and in Government but I would like to see it done fair and square and in a democratic way, not pushed around just to keep the numbers right and the p.c. brigade happy. If the best person for the job just happens to be a woman, then great, give her the job, if it's a man, give it to him. Local and national government should never be about the sex of the candidate, the candidacy should be decided on merit alone. Who's the best for the job, voted for by the people to represent the people.

This seem's to have the stench of that "Man Hater" Harriet Harperson, the woman who if had the choice (and the oppertunity) would exterminate every male on the planet !

Just another example of how the labour party has become the british version of the old russian communist party.I hope the voters of wigan will wake up and not vote labour whoever they decide to put up for election.
