Calls are growing for spy cameras to be installed on a Wigan community car park after a series of incidents.
The final straw for Coun Paul Prescott was the attempted robbery of a 60-year-old woman in Pemberton last week in which she was repeatedly punched in the face and chest.

This incident came after a number of deliberate fires were set in industrial bins at the rear of Ormskirk Road shops in the same car park. The fires could have spread to the shops.

Coun Prescott says that previous attempts to motivate local store owners into contributing towards CCTV for the car park, next to St John's Church, has been met with enthusiasm by a few but indifference by many.
He hopes, now that property is in danger, more will be galvanised into taking action.

He also hopes to secure a grant – funding is still available for curbing anti-social behaviour.
The mugging, which prompted the councillor's renewed call, took place at 12.50pm last Saturday when the woman got into her car at the back of Lamberhead Post Office after visiting the cash machine.

A man opened the door and tried to snatch her purse but the victim put up a struggle, clinging on to the purse.
At this point the thief hit her several times in the face and chest.
He eventually gave up and ran off empty-handed towards nearby St John's Church.

The woman was left with scratches to her face and was extremely distressed by what happened.
Coun Prescott has spoken to the woman since.

The cameras are useless they aren't clear enough. We need more beat coppers. When did you last see one? I bet it was at the football.

I really am upsetting someone this will be my third posting I wonder how long this one will last!
Total agreement with comment 4, even if you could see the images on the CCTVs anyone who really did not want to be identified only has to cover up their faces.
Also why should the local buisness people on pemberton have to contribute to the installation of these cameras, there are over 600 in Wigan did the shops and bar owners there have to contribute?
We are all paying through the noses with the NEW-labour taxes So I will ask again "WHY IS paul prescott NOT ASKING THE POLICE TO HAVE THESE CAMERAS INSTALLED".

Well I was not let down although it did take them or should I say him longer to delete me this time than it did the last, obviously I am hitting a nerve so here we go again for my 4 comment lets see how long this one lasts!
There are over 600 CCTV cameras in Wigan did the bar owners and shopkeepers in Wigan have to contribute to their installation, So why does paul prescott want the shopkeepers in Pemberton to pay for the installation of CCTV. Surely with all the stealth taxes NEW-labour have brought in there is enough money in the kitty to pay for a few cameras!
paul prescott is supposed to represent Pemberton ward
(I say this tongue in cheek) so why is he not banging on the doors of wigan council demanding funding if this is such a big problem in Pemberton.
