Heinz's profits go up while pensioners receive beanz

We are writing with reference to the September 4 Wigan Evening Post article regarding the dramatic sales increase in HJ Heinz baked beans.
We are extremely pleased that the company is doing so well on top of their recent record quarterly company profits.
In fact HJ Heinz company stock news and information on August 13 said: "Heinz Declares Quarterly Dividend... Heinz's profits increase 12 per cent, beating Wall Street expectations."
It's about time that HJ Heinz awarded its 75 Fund/Pensioners indexed linking, the same as everyone else – without having to suffer the indignity of going with the begging bowl year after year. They can well afford it with their huge profit margins
They gave their working lives making the brand the market leader in the United Kingdom food industry. It's about time the company did the honourable thing and rewarded them with a yearly index-linked pay award.
We have resigned from the PCC committee in total disgust at HJ Heinz management's attitude. But we would like to reassure everyone we will continue our fight to get all the 75 Pension fund pensioners index-linked.

Plan to get views heard properly
In response to the story Battle to defeat precinct plans (September 10). While I agree with Coun Winkworth, the proper place to present objections to this development is to the Planning Department at Wigan Council and not within the newspaper.
Also, after numerous visits to my surgery from concerned residents and answering emails on the proposed development, my advice has been to contact the Planning Department before September 25 and register their comments.
They will not be heard otherwise.

Councillors did not walk out of meeting
In response to the story Probe demand after walkout (September 9), Lord Peter Smith implied that councillors "were sitting behind empty glasses in the bar when the meeting was finished". What he fails to mention is, that many of those members who walked out went straight to the public gallery to listen to the rest of the motions. I was one of those councillors.
We ended up leaving the public viewing area because the debate that was taking place between New Labour and the Conservatives served no purpose.
Their 'debate' was nothing more than pre-general election political point scoring. Both parties wasted 25 minutes of valuable debate time slandering a Conservative 'think tank'. What has that got to do with our borough?
The Chamber spent less than 10 minutes debating the proposed changes to Tunstall House; an issue worthy of much more time.
The reason for our departure was due to Coun Smith's suspension of rules to the Constitution. Why? There were 13 motions being put to Full Council that night and his was 12th. Realistically Coun Smith's motion would not have been debated, and - we believe - because of this, he changed the rules to suit himself.
The next Full Council meeting will be on October 29. Let the public witness for themselves true representation of the people, without the party politics.
