No easy job getting hold of my birth certificate
Published Date:
22 September 2008
Looking to improve myself, I applied for several jobs but to prove I was eligible to work in the UK, I needed a birth certificate.
I rang the replacement office on the Friday and was assured there was no problem. As the interview was at the end of the following week, they could post it rather than me going to their offices. This cost me £7.
As it got to Wednesday and I was starting to worry I wouldn't get it on time, I went back to the office only to be told it had been posted on the Friday and it should have been delivered.
I was told the only alternative was to pay an extra £7 to get another, which I declined.
A lady was in the office at the same time as me.
She filled in a form, handed over £7 and was issued a certificate in under five minutes.
By the Friday the certificate still hadn't arrived.
I was stunned. It appears anyone can use this process in five minutes and have a legal document in their hands.
Yet over a week went by, and I hadn't.

Not aware of bus cut consultation
In a recent letter to the Wigan Evening Post regarding the withdrawal of the 620 bus service Hindley Coun Jim Ellis states "only Mr McCartney and Ashton councillors were consulted and had been involved in negotiations" about the withdrawal.
I can't speak for the other Ashton councillors but this is news to me.
Arriva (the bus company involved) have never contacted me about the route.
As far as I am aware they just withdrew it without any consultation.
If Coun Ellis read my blog (http://nigelash.blogspot.com) he will see that on the August19 I was asking people to support a resident who was opposing the withdrawal of the route. Furthermore I have written to Arriva bus company complaining about the closure of the service and asking them for a meeting to discuss this matter.
Coun Nigel Ash,
Ashton
Help raise funds for poppy heroes
The leaves are starting to fall and the red poppy of Remembrance is starting to bloom.
It is that time of year when we start to remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and give thanks to those who returned.
The Royal British Legion is the nation's foremost ex-service charity and at this time of year needs your help.
For more than 80 years it has been ready and able to help all those who come to the legion for assistance.
It is essential we raise the funds necessary if we are to continue to give that help to all those who come to us in their hour of need.
Will you be our hero and give one hour or more of your time to this very worthy cause? Please phone the poppy hotline on 07884253848.

Great walk in park
I am writing on behalf of the Meningitis Trust to thank everyone from the Wigan area and beyond who enjoyed the glorious Haigh Country Park on Sunday, September 14.
In the Walk in the Park fundraiser, adults and children alike walked with one thing in common - to support the Meningitis Trust in the North West.
Money raised will be used to provide practical and emotional support to families and individuals, whose lives have been shattered by meningitis.

community development officer, The Meningitis Trust
