Police probing a robbery in which a cyclist was smashed over the back of the head with a wooden cudgel have made three arrests.

It was at around 6am on Saturday that a man was cycling close to the junction of the guided busway and Holden Road in Leigh when he was approached by a group of men.

One of the gang was armed with a piece of wood which he used to attack the victim and knock him from his bike.

The man was further assaulted as he lay on the ground.

The pair then stole the victim's bike, phone and wallet before fleeing the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for a head injury but has since been well enough to be released from hospital.

Police have now arrested three men aged 18, 23 and 24 on suspicion of robbery.

All three have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Howwever officers are continuing to appeal for information following the incident.
