Living Faith Church, located on Church Street in Orrell, is set to mark the 200th anniversary of its historic building with a special bicentennial concert.

The event will feature a celebration of hymns and a guest speaker, Bishop Michael Fleming, also known as "Pastor Mick," one of Britain’s most recognized ministers.

The church, previously known as Salem United Reformed Church, has a rich history dating back to its origins as a Congregational Church. The first chapel was built in 1804 by Richard Woodward, in the garden behind his house. In 1810, John Capper became the first minister, employed by the Lancashire Congregational Union. By 1812, the church was already educating 130 children in its Sunday School. In 1820, John Holgate became minister and remained so for 30 years. Holgate, a dedicated advocate for education, raised funds to build an elementary day school for local children. In a remarkable show of commitment, he walked nearly 40 miles to Liverpool and back to secure funds for essential supplies like shoes. The permanent church building was completed in 1824, and the church became known as "Holgate's Chapel."

The church developed further during the successful Pastorate of Reverend John Whitton (1883-1917) who, like John Holgate was an advocate of education. In 2018, Living Faith Church moved from its previous location in Winstanley to the Orrell site, undertaking significant renovations to preserve the building for future generations.

Bishop Steven Lyn Evans, speaking ahead of the event, said, "We are delighted to be hosting this celebration service and warmly welcome the community to join us. It would be wonderful to see anyone who has played a part in the church’s history over the years."

The concert will take place on Friday the 18th October 2024, at 7:30pm, with tea, coffee, and cake served from 6:30pm. at the Connect Centre behind the church.
