Lidl is set to build its eighth store in the centre of Ashton-in-Makerfield as part of its ongoing expansion ambitions within Great Britain. The announcement comes as Lidl confirms that it has completed the acquisition of land in Princess Road.

The new store represents a multi-million-pound investment in the local area with Lidl proposing to build a store with 1,230m² sales area. The supermarket will feature facilities including an instore bakery, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

The new supermarket forms part of Lidl’s continued investment into the area which includes the development of a larger new store in Golborne, which opened in 2019, and modernisation and extension works to stores in Wigan town centre, Pemberton and Leigh over the last 12 months. Two further new stores are planned for Parr Bridge, which is set to open early 2021 and Woodhouse Lane, which is currently in its planning stage.

Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Nick Harvey commented: “We are thrilled to confirm plans to bring a new store to Ashton in Makerfield, marking another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme. We have invested significantly in the metropolitan borough of Wigan over the last few years, both in terms of investing in our existing portfolio and through our planned new stores, and we are excited to be able to offer a greater selection of our quality products and incredible value to even more shoppers.

“We are firmly committed to helping boost the local economy by creating new jobs and working with local suppliers in the construction of the new store. The team are very much looking forward to confirming a date for our public consultation day when we will outline our plans and get input from those who will directly benefit from the new store.”

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.45bn investment in its expansion across Great Britain in 2019 and 2020. Its ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlighting Lidl’s increase in sales year on year and market share of 6.0%.
