Wigan food hygiene ratings - results from August to September 2020

The borough’s pubs, cafes and restaurants are facing more uncertainty as the English lockdown gets under way, but many have managed to earn top marks for hygiene

ahead of their imposed closures.

Inspectors from the Food Standards Agency dropped in unannounced on 63 food-serving businesses across Wigan borough from mid-August to the end of September, dishing out marks of Very Good or Good to 45 of them (71.4 per cent).

Of those high marks, 28 venues were given the top score of Five, while 17 received a Four.

In the middle ground, a dozen eateries earned a Good rating of Three.

Businesses that serve food are rated on how hygienically it is handled; how it is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored; the condition of the structure of the buildings; the cleanliness, lay-out, lighting, ventilation and other facilities, as well as how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.
