Holiday Express Inn Wigan: meet the people keeping the hotel ticking

The concept of hotels, places offering refuge to weary travellers, has been around since humanity’s earliest civilisations. Founded in 705, Japan’s Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan is officially the world’s oldest hotel, but closer to home, the far newer Holiday Inn Express hotel in Wigan has its charms too.

Opened in December 2017, the hotel is one of Holiday Inn Express’ 2,826 worldwide branches. “I really enjoy working here, you meet new people and you get to know the regulars well,” said Deputy General Manager Karis Platt, 38, who looks after the running of the hotel with General Manager James Foxall.

“It really keeps it interesting,” added Karis, who is from Ashton-in-Makerfield and has worked at the hotel since it opened. “I’ve worked in hotels for 15 years and we have a really enjoyable atmosphere.”

Guest Service Assistant Rhian Bailey, 29, agrees. “I do everything from checking people in to running meals, serving on the bar, and cleaning,” she said. “The variety keeps it interesting and each day is different. There’s never a dull day.

“It’s completely different to other jobs; previously I’ve worked in restaurants and it’s so much more relaxed and enjoyable here,” added Rhian, who is from Standish and has worked at the hotel for 14 months. “We really enjoy our time with the guests. There’s a lot of pride in the work and when guests come back and remember you, it’s great.”

Having started as a Room Attendant, now-Housekeeping Manager Kamila Antczak, 38, has worked at Holiday Express Inn Wigan for two years. “I make sure everything is clean and tidy to ensure we get 100% customer satisfaction,” she said. “It’s lovely when we get good reviews from people.”
