Men's Collective: the brothers behind Wigan's newest up-and-coming barbershop

An up-and-coming barbershop owned by a pair of Swinley-born brothers, Men's Collective opened its doors in October last year.

On their way to their jobs at another barber's in Whelley, Jack and Sam Moorcroft spotted a shop at the bottom of their parents' road and thought it would be perfect. With the establishment newly kitted out, Men's Collective was born.

"I started in barbering first and my brother, who didn't know what to do after college, did the same and took to it like a duck to water," said Jack, 25. "We were going past the shop at the bottom of our mum and dad's street every day and basically just said 'why not just go for it?'

"It's a big step to open a business but it's been really good and we've gone from strength to strength," he added. "We're getting new faces all the time and the shop's in a good position right across from the college so we've kept ticking over. It helps that we work in an industry we love; you don't feel like you're going to work, you're just cutting your mates' hair and having a chat and a laugh."

Enjoying meeting new people and watching their client base steadily grow, Jack says that they are on the lookout for another talented barber to join them and put the shop's third chair to good use.

"Being self-employed is a bit different but I've really enjoyed it," said Jack. "When you're your own boss you get out what you put in and I don't think I could go back to being employed. It's been smooth sailing for us and we had loads of lads who followed us from the old place, which is great.

"We're starting to see more familiar faces turning up, too, so we've got a good clientele behind us given how recently we opened," he continued. "We've just got to keep pushing."
