Saddle Junction roadworks causing a stir

Traffic backs up as it approaches the Saddle

Work began on new cycle lanes at the Saddle junction at the start of this week, and road users are already seeing an impact on traffic in all directions, with long tailbacks and frequent gridlock.

Works at both the Saddle junction and on Wallgate are part of the Transport for Greater Manchester Cycle Cities project, and is being funded through the Department for Transport.

The project is investing in alternative walking and cycling routes across the region. It will also work hand-in-hand with the Robin Park Road cycle lane.

The council has moved to remind residents of the positive impact the finished works will have across the borough.

Becca Heron, director for economy and skills, said: “This innovative project is now underway, allowing us to act on our commitment to improving connectivity across the borough for commuters of all kind.

“Providing safe and high-quality routes can encourage people to think about alternative modes of transport, which will reduce congestion and have a range of health benefits.

“We appreciate that these planned works may cause some disruption for motorists but we would like to reassure the public that this is temporary and that we are working with the contractors to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.”

She added: “Temporary traffic lights will be used during off-peak hours to allow rush hour traffic to flow and we will only close lanes when essential.

“We will keep residents informed on the progress of the project and they are encouraged to follow the council’s social media channels for regular updates.”
