Mercedes has officially unveiled its first all-electric car – the 402bhp EQC SUV.
Revealed ahead of its public debut at the Paris Motor Show, the EQC is the first in a family of up to 10 pure EVs from the German brand.
The EQC is due to go on sale next year with prices expected to start from north of Â£60,000, putting it directly in competition with the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X and upcoming Audi E-Tron Quattro, also expected on sale in 2019.
Based on a heavily modified version of the GLCâ€™s platform, the EQC is a large five-seat SUV, which Mercedes says combines its traditional strengths of comfort and quality with cutting-edge technology.
Its all-electric drivetrain will be used across the Mercedes EQ family and comprises two electric motors – one driving the front wheels, the other the rears – powered by an 80kWh battery.
In total the motors put out 402bhp and 564lb/ft of torque, which will get the 2.4-tonne car to 62mph in 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 112mph.
Range is stated at 280 miles under the old NEDC testing regime and 249 miles under the new WLTP figures.
Mercedes says the EQC is equipped with a 7.4kW on-board AC charger for standard home and public charging points but is also equipped to accept rapid DC charging. Using the fastest 110kW DC chargers, the EQC will charge from 10 to 80 per cent full in around 40 minutes.
Alongside the latest drivetrain technology Mercedes says that the EQC pioneers an avant-garde electro-look with a wide high-gloss black front panel incorporating full-width LED light. Interior features include a broad digital instrument and infotainment display, a ribbed edge to the instrument panel to resembles the cooling ribs of a hi-fi amplifier and a high-tech, high-gloss cassette housing flat air vents with rosÃ©-gold coloured louvres.
The EQC will be built on the main assembly line at Mercedesâ€™ Bremen plant as well as in Bejing for the Chinese market. Order books are expected to open early next year with deliveries starting in the third quarter.
