GCSE results: impressive grades from pupils at Outwood Academy, St Peter's and Golborne high schools

Pupils across the Wigan borough had plenty to celebrate as they opened their GCSE results on Thursday morning.

It has been a successful year all round, with many schools achieving higher grades than before the coronavirus pandemic began and formal exams last took place.

Students at Outwood Academy, in Hindley, not only beat the results achieved in 2019 – pre-pandemic – but many subjects matched or exceeded the results that staff awarded over the last two years, when external examinations were not held.

One of the standout pupils was Aimee O’Sullivan-Smith, who achieved grade nine in all of her subjects.

Golborne High School staff and pupils were celebrating a set of exceptional GCSE results from their year 11 pupils.

Rosie F received nine grade nines, Lizzie W received seven grade nines and two grade eights, Daniel N received five grade nines, three grade eights and one grade six, and Zak S received five grade nines, two grade eights, one grade seven and one distinction level two.

Headteacher Alison Gormally said: “We are incredibly proud of the success that all of our year 11 pupils have achieved. Congratulations and good luck to all of you.”

At St Peter's Catholic High School in Orrell, year 11 pupils also achieved some strong results in their GCSE exams.

Headteacher Andy McGlown said: “We are very proud of their achievements and would like to thank their families for their support of our school during the pandemic.

"This morning saw some nerves, but ultimately a lot of smiles!”
