More Wigan schools send year groups home due to Covid-19

All pupils in year nine at The Deanery CE High School are remaining at home until Monday September 28.

The school on Frog Lane is following Public Health England advice after a case of the coronavirus was confirmed there.

In a letter to parents and carers the school said: "We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of Covid-19 to others in the community."

The year nine pupils should remain isolated from others until September 28.

Other members of their households can continue with normal activities unless they begin developing symptoms of the coronavirus.

Wigan Council has also confirmed that a group of pupils and staff at Mabs Cross Community Primary School on Standishgate are currently isolating following a positive case.

And a similar move has had to be made at Canon Sharples CE Primary School and Nursery in Whelley.

Jennifer Woodcock, executive headteacher, said: "After consultation with the public health team at Wigan Council we are following advice and taking the step of isolating 110 children and 12 staff.

"The school continues to take the relevant and necessary safety measures to protect pupils and staff."
