VIDEO: Pupils give their teachers a good soaking for charity

Teachers at a Wigan secondary school were in the firing line as students lined up to throw wet sponges at them for charity.

The drenching was one of several events Cansfield High School in Ashton has come up with recently to help out Cancer Research UK and Dementia UK.

A total of 28 teachers volunteered to sit in stocks made by the technology department and decorated in the school's art rooms.

Unsurprisingly teachers were initially a bit reluctant to be soaked but eventually the good cause was enough to win them round.

The sponge chucking was the last of three events raising cash to be split between the two charities.

Students firstly took part in a penalty shoot out against one of the teachers, who impressively saved more of the 95 spot-kicks than he let in.

There was then a mass walk around the school field during lunchtime, with dozens of pupils and staff braving burning temperatures to complete laps of the green space.

It is hoped the fund-raising effort for the year will now meet Cansfield's £8,000 total, with each year group also having to come up with events for their chosen causes.

Lead for progress and standards Lisa Rothwell said: "As a school, we are incredibly proud and grateful to both our students and their families for the generous support they have given us with our charity work."
