Areas in Wigan borough with most new Covid-19 cases revealed

The Government's coronavirus data website shows which local neighbourhoods currently have the highest levels of infection.

The website tracks cases in a recent seven-day period for Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs), which divide the country up into areas with roughly similar populations.

Lowton was the area in Wigan with the highest number of recent cases, with 13 between September 3 and September 9.

This also neighbours Newton-le-Willows which recorded 31 cases in the seven-day period.

Winstanley had 10 cases in the other notable figure from the borough.

The other MSOAs in Wigan borough had case numbers for the seven days in single digits.

Public Health England data released on Sunday showed the latest coronavirus new case rate for Wigan is 42.3 per 100,000 residents, putting the borough on amber alert level.

This is still the third smallest rate in Greater Manchester but neighbouring Bolton, which is continuing to see a sharp rise in cases, now has 192 per 100,000 people.
