Council tracker shows surging Covid-19 rates in Wigan

Wigan had the second-highest rate in Greater Manchester in the most recent statistics and case numbers almost doubled in a week.

There were 1,166 new cases identified, a rate of 354.8 per 100,000 residents, in the seven days between Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Of the 10 local authorities in the city-region only Trafford had a higher rate, at 364 per 100,000 residents.

The weekly total is almost double the 599 cases from the previous week and is the highest figure recorded since mid-November.

Wigan's case rate was lower than those seen in the neighbouring boroughs of St Helens, Warrington and West Lancashire, and is also below the average rate for the North West, at 419 cases per 100,000 people, and England’s rate of 572.1 per 100,000 residents.

Case rates in the borough have now been rising for two weeks, mirroring increases both regionally and nationally.

Increasing infection rates could also be seen across the borough in the latest data.

Of the 25 council wards in Wigan and Leigh, only Winstanley saw a decrease from the previous week.

Between Christmas Eve and December 30 the highest rate was in Lowton East, followed by Astley Mosley Common.

Worsley Mesnes saw the largest increase from the previous week, with a spike of 138 per cent.

This was followed by Ashton, where the rate went up by 133 per cent.

As of Christmas Day there had been 746 deaths registered for Wigan residents that mentioned Covid-19, with 21 registrations in the latest week, the same as the previous week.

Four-fifths of the borough's deaths with Covid-19 have happened in hospital, with 14 per cent in care homes and three per cent in houses.

Wigan, along with all authorities in Greater Manchester, is currently classed as a Very High Risk area.

As of December 5 a total of 93 per cent of all contacts escalated to local tracing teams had been successfully managed.
