The town hall has closed all of its public areas such as parks and markets in a bid to help delay the spread of Covid-19. The government also announced a nationwide lockdown on Monday, with people only allowed to leave the house for food shopping, medical emergencies or daily exercise.

But that hasn't stopped some people from flouting the guidance.

A statement on the councils social media channels said: "Wigan Council is reminding residents to listen to Public Health guidance and stay at home.

"This follows reports from our staff in Mesnes Park who have seen parents lifting children over the locked gates allowing them to use the play area.

"The instructions are clear for everyone that they need to stay at home unless they are going for one permitted walk, a form of exercise, shopping for basic necessities or medical needs.

"Only by minimising contact with people are we going to prevent the spread of the virus."
