NHS Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) announced on social media that a man identified only as Mr Ashurst had been vaccinated.

A tweet said: "Exciting to have the first covid vaccine delivered in Wigan Borough today. Mr Ashurst was the first in the Borough to receive his vaccine this morning. Well done Mr Ashurst!"

The vaccine is currently being offered in some hospitals and at vaccination centres run by GPs.

It is initially being given to people over 80 who already have a hospital appointment in the next few weeks, people who live or work in care homes, and healthcare workers at high risk.

The vaccine will then be rolled out to more people around the country.
