The latest daily update from the NHS shows that in the 24 hours leading up to 5pm on Monday, June 13, there were no deaths at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) NHS Foundation Trust in which Covid-19 was recorded as either a direct cause of death or a contributing factor alongside underlying health conditions.

This was the eleventh day in a row no deaths related to the coronavirus were recorded at WWL.

The last death recorded for the trust was on July 2.

It can take several days for some deaths to be registered on the NHS database and figures are often amended to show deaths on days where none were previously thought to have occurred.

The official number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Wigan borough is 2,135, according to official government data.

But as most people feeling ill are advised to self-isolate and not seek medical attention unless their condition deteriorates, it is assumed that the real infection rate is far higher.

The number of Covid-19 related deaths at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust in the previous seven days is:

July 13 (before 5pm): 0

July 12: 0

July 11: 0

July 10: 0

July 9: 0

July 8: 0

July 7: 0

These figures are updated at 2pm each day and include confirmed cases reported at 5pm the previous day. Confirmation of Covid-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure.

This means that the totals reported at 5pm on each day may not include all deaths that occurred on that day or on recent prior days.

These figures do not include deaths outside hospital, such as those in care homes. This approach makes it possible to compile deaths data on a daily basis using up to date figures.

From Tuesday, April 28, NHS England and NHS Improvement started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result, but where Covid-19 is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death on part one or part two of the death certification process.

This change has been introduced for deaths that occurred on April 24 and subsequently and is shown separately in the region data table only. When making comparisons over time these figures should not be included.

The full data set can be found on the NHS England website.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
