The town hall's weekly tracker showed there were 95 new cases identified between August 30 and September 5, a rate of 28.9 per 100,000 residents.

And Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham shared figures on Wednesday afternoon which depicted the growth of new cases in Wigan as the rate was just 9.7 per 100,000 people in the week ending August 15.

However, despite Wigan having lost its green status for new cases and its exceedence rating for the growth of infections being red, the council's tracker does clearly show the borough is still seeing lower figures than many neighbouring local authorities.

Wigan's latest figure remains the second lowest in Greater Manchester for the latest complete week, which runs up to September 5.

However, the chart for cases over the latest seven days, between August 31 and September 6, showed both Trafford and Stockport having lower rates than Wigan.

In better news, though, Wigan's rate remained lower than in neighbouring St Helens, Warrington and West Lancashire.

The borough's figure of 28.9 new cases per 100,000 residents between August 31 and September 5 was notably lower than the North West average of 40.6 per 100,000 but above the England rate of 21.7 per 100,000.

In response to the latest figures the council says a local escalation plan has been put into action.

No deaths related to Covid-19 were registered in the most recent complete week and the local contact tracing teams have successfully managed every case escalated to them.
