Louise's group brings together people still suffering from long lists of symptoms months after they initially contracted Covid-19.

A number of volunteers have been trying out at a vitamin stack developed by a team in South Africa, having been in dialogue with them at their hospital in Port Elizabeth for several months.

She says the results of the initial tests here have been positive enough that she is now lobbying MPs to support a more widespread and scientifically-rigorous trial of the treatment.

Louise said: “We feel the first results show there has been enough impact for this to require further investigation as a potential treatment.

“There is a debate next week in the House of Commons on long haul Covid and we are hoping several MPs will present this.

“We’re asking politicians to fund or part-fund a fully randomised, clinical trial of this.

“The first 25 volunteers in our group are reporting very positive improvements. These people were all basically bedridden so this could be life-changing. We want the Government to take a closer look at this.”

Louise’s group has organised 62 volunteers into five groups to try out the vitamin stack, which has also been tested in South Africa.

The team in Port Elizabeth have been working on the possible treatment after writing a scientific paper which suggested deficiencies in a chemical compound in the body could lead to a greater risk of someone becoming seriously ill or dying with Covid-19.

Volunteers have been reporting improvements in some of the many symptoms they have been battling due to long Covid.

Some issues have already been noted, including the potential that people will need to keep taking the stack in order to continue experiencing the benefits of it.

Louise has now written to Jeremy Hunt, the chair of the health select committee in parliament, health secretary Matt Hancock and DWP minister Therese Coffey to inform them what the volunteers are doing.

The group is also trying to drum up interest among doctors, particularly to find medical professionals who could oversee a full trial which had full ethical approval.
