The woman called Carol (whose surname has not been revealed), had been in the ICU at Wigan Infirmary for more than a month, and had required a ventilator to help her breathe.

But she has made a remarkable recovery from her illness - details of which have also not been confirmed by the hospital - and was given the green light to leave intensive care by doctors.

NHS workers lined the corridors and clapped for Carol as she was wheeled back to another ward where she will continue her recovery.
