WITH less than a fortnight to go until the Wigan 10k, excitement is continuing to build across the town.
More and more runners are taking to the streets with many taking on the route the race will take itself.
Anyone wanting to take part is urged to sign up at www.wigan10k.co.uk as soon as possible with 3,000 people already booking their place and the limit set at 3,500 ahead of the August 31 deadline.
Runners will line up on Market Street on September 6 before heading down along Parsons Walk, Park Road, Woodhouse Lane and Scot Lane before turning left down Stadium Way to the DW Stadium, where a steel band will be performing.
They’ll do a lap of the ground before heading back along the exact same path as the way out of town but with added detours of Martland Mill and Mesnes Park.
Back in the town centre there will be live music with food and drink available as the afterparty continues throughout the afternoon.
Before all that though, Wigan athlete Jenny Meadows will get the runners under starters’ orders with organiser Matt Johnson delighted she has taken up the role.
He said: “We are delighted that Jenny has accepted our invitation to start this year’s race. She has been our first choice since we started thinking about our 2015 event at the end of last year.
“Jenny has been such a fantastic role model for British Athletics for so long and has done so much to promote her home town of Wigan that we couldn’t think of anyone better to get our runners under way next month.
“We are getting really excited as race day approaches and we can’t wait for Jenny to be part of our hat-trick of 10ks – hopefully with another medal under her belt from the World Championships. Good luck Jenny!”
Although the main event will take place on the Sunday, on Saturday September 5, there will once again be a special event for children at Robin Park with a 1k race for under-eights at 11am, a 2k race for 9 to 12-year-olds at 11.30am and a 3k run for children aged 13 and above at noon.
There will be a £1 donation for Joining Jack during sign up on the day and organisers are trying to encourage the youngsters to then head along on the Sunday and support their mums and dads in the 10k.
