DIE-hard Wigan Athletic fans will spend more than £1,000 a season to see their favourite team play away.

Figures by The Capital One Cup Football Travel Index show that Latics supporters will travel for 5,842 minutes, covering 5,536.8 miles, and spend around £1,033 on fuel as they go to away matches this season.

Season tickets range between £255 and £330, depending on which rates people opt for.

But fans are lucky Latics are in the Premier League, as those in League Two journeying to all away league games will travel on average 25 per cent further during the season.

Across the divisions, revellers watching League Two’s Plymouth Argyle will travel the furthest.

Ed Jones, spokesman for Wigan Athletic, said: “Our season tickets are the cheapest in the Premier League.

“In a very competitive area in the sense there are huge football clubs within a stone’s throw of our stadium, we try to make the site attractive and offer value for money.

“Our supporters are fantastic and really loyal to the club.

“They do travel across the country and spend a lot of time and money and their dedication should be praised.

“We do not like to take fans for granted and we try to create opportunities that will benefit them.”
