A CHARITY football match involving Wigan Athletic stars of yesteryear has been re-arranged for next Friday, May 22, at Ashton Town FC - with a few more celebrity surprises!
Legends such as Roberto Martinez, Graeme Jones, Nathan Ellington and Stuart Barlow were all set to take on Latics development squad for Joseph’s Goal last week but the game had to be shelved due to torrential rain.
However, after some quick re-thinking by Ashton chairman Mark Hayes and Joseph’s Goal founder Paul Kendrick, the game is now back on with a 7.30pm kick-off and a few new names to boot.
The opposition has also had a change too. With the devlopment squad on their hols, a team from Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks has stepped up to the mark to take part instead.
Paul said: “We were obviously disappointed to have to postpone the original game, but we had no choice given the torrential rain on the day. On the plus side it’s given us extra time to secure even more legends, some of whom were desperate to play last time but had other commitments.
“Mario Melchiot, for example, is now free and flying in for the game which is just fantastic, and speaks volumes for both the football club and the charity. We will be announcing even more names over the coming days.
“I’m told the record attendance at Ashton is 1,400, but we’d already sold close on 1,000 in advance of last week’s game, and we’re very confident of not only smashing the record but achieving a sell-out of 2,000.
“Watching Boycey walk out as Wigan captain for possibly the last time will be emotional and will make for an even more unforgettable night.”
