Wigan Council is working with local bands and presenter, Chris Milow, to ensure a festive show can still go ahead in line with Covid-19 guidance.

On Saturday November 21, a pre-recorded show called Frost Fest Virtual Christmas, will be streamed across a number of social media platforms, including Wigan Council's and a new events page called This is Wigan.

Popular band, The Lancashire Hotpots, will be the headlining act and the event will kick off at 7pm.

Leader of Wigan Council, Coun David Molyneux said: “This year has been a testing time for residents and although we’ve had to adapt or postpone many of our annual events, we’re committed to bringing some festive cheer to residents’ homes as we gear up for Christmas.

“Our teams have been working really hard over the last few months to look at how we can work differently to ensure our residents still have access to the events they would usually enjoy with their families.”

Ashton’s lights will be switched on first, followed by Leigh and Wigan town centres.

Performances with local bands have been recorded and will stream alongside local business videos, encouraging people to shop local this Christmas.

Coun Molyneux added: “The lead up to Christmas is always a vibrant time in our borough and we’re keen to ensure such spirit continues this year. Our independent retailers really need our support, so we’re also encouraging people to shop local this Christmas to help our small businesses through the pandemic.

“Although we would love to host our usual outdoor stage-event, the safety of our communities is of paramount importance.

“So, over the last few weeks, we’ve been pulling together some exciting and innovative content, which will be streamed virtually in the form of an online show.

“We’re excited about the first digital Frost Fest and look forward to delivering more shows in different ways while still bringing our communities together.”

The pandemic will also mean that Wigan town centre’s annual Santa parade, which usually takes place on a Sunday and sees Father Christmas travelling around the streets on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, won’t take place in its usual form - if at all.

A council spokesman said that in view of recent announcements, there wouldn’t be a reindeer parade like those of previous years.

He added: “We are still reviewing the latest guidelines and will monitor the situation to see where we are in the closer run-up to Christmas.”
