A GIANT water slide in Wigan town centre will run for a second day after proving a massive hit with residents.

The 110m-long chute will run down Standishgate from the Grand Arcade to the finish line outside the Wilkinson store in aid of Wigan and Leigh Hospice (WLH).

The Ticket to Slide event was originally intended to be a one-day attraction on Saturday July 16, but will now run on Sunday August 17 too as the first batch of 700 tickets has almost sold out.

Around 1,100 people will take the white-knuckle plunge through Wigan town centre during the weekend, with enquiries flooding in to the Hindley-based charity from around the world.

WLH fund-raising and lottery manager Maxine Armstrong said: “We have been overwhelmed by the demand and sold more than 300 tickets on the first day. We even had one man who heard about the slide call us for tickets while he was on holiday in Thailand.

“It’s proven so popular we don’t want to disappoint anyone so we’ve decided to run the slide over the whole weekend and give more than 1,000 people the chance to take part.”

The hospice is now looking for volunteers to turn up on Saturday morning and help build the course out of more than 300 bales of hay, which will be donated by farmers, plastic sheets and rubber matting.

Firefighters will provide the water while a slippery material will cover the slide to ensure riders enjoy a high-speed experience.

Coun David Molyneux, deputy leader at Wigan Council, said: “We want to thank the people of Wigan for getting behind this charity event as the funds raised will make such a difference to so many people and their families who rely on the services provided by Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

“When we realised demand was so high for tickets for the water slide we were keen to help make more available to allow more people to take part and to help boost the amount raised for the hospice.”

Ticket to Slide will take place on Saturday August 16 and Sunday August 17 from 11.30am until 4pm. Tickets are £10 on a first come, first served basis and participants will be asked to choose a time slot when they buy.
