WIGAN’S John Whaite was last night crowned champion of this year’s Great British Bake Off – and put his victory down to his university degree.
He said studying helped him concentrate while the show was being filmed.
And not only did he graduate with first-class honours in law, he won the competition – the surprise TV hit of the year.
John, 23, who hails from Wrightington but now lives in Manchester, said: “If I hadn’t been in the middle of the degree I’m not sure I would have won.
“It meant I had to be organised and know what I needed for the exam and what I needed for baking. I don’t think I’d have got such a good grade without Bake Off.”
