Kay’s travels

SKY News reader Kay Burley is certainly well travelled.

The former Beech Hill resident enjoyed an action-packed year, sightseeing in Africa and Asia, as well as venturing to more tourist spots such as Mallorca - and England’s very own Blackpool.

So what has been her highlights and disappointments whilst on her travels?

She told The Daily Mail: “My definitive travel moment of 2013 was being convinced a lion was about to jump into the open-sided safari vehicle I was sitting in at Ulusaba game reserve in South Africa.

“He looked me straight in the eye, and I could see he was thinking: ‘I could if I wanted to, but today’s you lucky day.’

“My biggest holiday disappointment was Cambodia.

“It is a country steeped in history, with magical architecture dating back 900 years.

“The people are some of the most generous-spirited I have met. But it is struggling to cope with the influx of western tourists.

“If you want to experience Angkor Wat, go now before it is too late.

“A place that surprised me in 2013 was Mallorca.

“The island had always meant dodgy hotels in Magaluf to me.

“However, this year I travelled up to the mountains on a walking holiday with friends, and it completely blew me away.

“What a magnificently beautiful island it is away from the party promenade.”

Looking ahead, Kay now has plans to walk along the GR20 trail in Corsica, and travel to Loch Lomond for a boot camp.

The 53-year-old also has dreams of going to Peru to do the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and aims to reach the base camp of Everest.

But whilst Kay has exotic tastes, she also has a fondness for Blackpool.

She said: “It is easy to be sniffy, but it is where we enjoyed many family holidays when I was a child. I returned for work this autumn, and walking along the promenade, taking in the sights of the tower and the piers, whisked me back to happy times.”
