WIGAN resident Kerry Katona is to star in a musical about Marilyn Monroe.
The Atomic Kitten singer, who is soon to leave her rented £3m mansion in the borough following her bankruptcy, announced on Twitter she’s landed the lead in new production Norma Jean The Musical.
In a statement on the show’s website, she said: “I’m thrilled to have been given this opportunity to play one of the world’s biggest female icons and can’t wait to get to work.
“A successful career in drama has always been a main goal of mine and this role is a challenge but one I’m going to grab with both hands.”
Writer and director Belvedere Pashun insisted Kerry was the only woman he had in mind to portray the enigmatic screen legend in his musical.
She said: “Marilyn’s life was one of extremes – poverty, abandonment, abuse followed by a flowering beauty which brought attention, fame, wealth and power and then the well documented tragic fall.
“I needed an actor of huge talent, personality and experience – Kerry was at the top of my list.
“This show will change the shape of people’s perceptions of Marilyn Monroe and we expect to announce a new star of drama on stage and screen with Kerry’s performance.”
Kerry’s debut performance in the show will take place in London in front of an invite-only audience on September 22.
The move proves a welcome boost to the 32-year-old, who had been criticised for declaring herself financially bankrupt.
The mother-of-four is determined not to let it get her down but her fiance, George Kay, told New! magazine that Kerry was still worrying about her financial security and was struggling to sleep.
The former rugby player said: “She’s struggling. I can tell she’s depressed because she curls up on the couch and falls asleep in the afternoon.”
The pair have now postponed plans for a big wedding, but it has been reported they are considering a simple, quickie ceremony in the near future.
