AWARD-winning sports champions enjoyed a special visit to Wigan Town Hall.

The Mayor of Wigan borough, Coun Susan Loudon, welcomed winners of this year’s Believe Sports Awards and those local stars who went on to triumph at the regional Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

Speaking in the Mayor’s Parlour, Coun Loudon said: “These awards celebrate everyone from rising sports stars to the volunteers who freely give up their own time to support grassroots sport in the borough.

“We’ve got a rich heritage of sporting success in the borough and these are the people paving the way for more success in the future.

“I was absolutely delighted to welcome the winners to the town hall and hope they all enjoyed the experience.”

The Believe Sports Awards are organised by leisure partner Inspiring healthy lifestyles on behalf of Wigan Council.

Three of this year’s winners went on to be recognised on the regional stage, at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

They were Frank Morgan (Unsung Hero), Jennie Myler (Sports Achiever of the Year) and Janine Paine (Volunteer of the Year).

The awards in October brought more than 300 people to the DW Stadium.

Among other winners was Astley and Tyldesley Cycling Club, which was named Club of the Year.
