WIGAN’S historic heritage landmarks are being honoured with a weekend of events.
A variety of activities were launched across the borough yesterday to herald national Heritage Open Days which celebrate England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public.
It’s a once-a-year chance to discover architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities that bring local history and culture to life at no charge.
At the Museum of Wigan Life, in Library Street, a children’s heritage trail will be available for visitors from 11am until 3pm tomorrow.
Entertainment also takes place at the Civic Square in Leigh tomorrow from 10.30am to 3pm.
Leigh for All’s Roll Up Roll Up event offers activities for history lovers of all ages, including tours of the Town Hall and Parish Church.
There will also be a rugby league talk by Geoff Lee, a family and local history fair, a vintage car rally and special visit from popular children’s character, Peppa Pig.
These events have been co-ordinated by the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, which manages arts, heritage and library events on behalf of the council and partners including the Leigh for All Working Group.
Two Hindley churches are also holding special events. All Saints and St Peter’s will both be hosting activities on Saturday.
