IT has been going for more than two decades but the World Pie Eating Competition just keeps on getting bigger.

The contest, which is won by the person who eats one pie the quickest, is held at Harry’s Bar, owned by Tony Callaghan, and last year 29 competitors took to the table.

It was one of the highest numbers to enter and was won by Kevin Astle of Worsley Mesnes in 29.19 seconds.

And next week the 2012 competition is being held at its usual place and at the same time as every year ... Pie Noon.

Harry’s Bar owner and event organiser Tony, who also owns the Fifteens chain and the Raven which recently reopened, is hoping for another successful event.

There will be an even bigger Wigan feel to the contest this year with Pooles pies called upon to supply the pastry products.

Tony said: “It’s such a popular event.

“This year we have teamed up with Pooles Pies who will be supplying the pies and sponsoring the event. I’m really looking forward to it once again, it’s always a great day and we get such a good turnout.

“Everyone enjoys themselves and obviously there is the important business of finding the champion. It’s got a lot of attention once again. The national media are always interested and we have had requests from nine TV companies.”
