From Shakespeare to Game of Thrones

Sir Ian McKellen took to the stage last night for an all-star celebration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death.

The actor, who grew up in Wigan, will be part of Shakespeare Live! at The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), in Stratford-upon-Avon, hosted by David Tennant.

The once-in-a-lifetime cast also includes Dame Judi Dench, Joseph Fiennes, Meera Syal, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Al Murray, Alison Moyet, Noma Dumezweni, Ian Bostridge, Rufus Wainwright, Tim Minchin, Paapa Essiedu, Pippa Nixon, Alexandra Gilbreath, Akala (Hip Hop Shakespeare), The Royal Ballet, English National Opera (ENO), The Orchestra of the Swan, and Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The event celebrates the Bard’s plays and their enduring influence on music, dance, opera, musical theatre and comedy.

Meanwhile, Sir Ian is to join Game of Thrones star Owen Teale in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land at Newcastle Theatre Royal from August 15 to 20.

He will also be reunited with his best pal, Sir Patrick Stewart,

The cast will provide much excitement to theatre goers and Sir Ian has already worked with Owen, who plays Ser Allister Thorne in the popular Game of Thrones series, in Dance of Death.

The Lord of The Rings star has also shot a short film, The Roof, with Noma Dumezweni​, Natalie Dormer and Jude Law. The short comedy by The Young Vic, follows what happens when legendary theatre director Peter Brook pays a visit.
