END OF AN ERA: 30 years of The Galleries

Council leaders have voted to demolish most of Wigan's Galleries shopping centre for a new £190m development par tof the Galleries 25 project. Building began in the late 1980s and the mall was opened in 1991 by Princess Diana.

The Galleries shopping centre has had a chequered past, rarely seeing all of its units filled, but in recent years it has been in decline, especially after the Grand Arcade opened and recession hit in 2008. It also holds fond memories for many and has hosted all manner of extraordinary events over the years too.
