VERNON Kay’s TV career was almost over in a flash when Chris Evans tried to sabotage his big break by stripping off behind the camera.
The ex-St John Rigby College student recalled his early days when he was in a rehearsal for Evans’s Channel 4 Saturday night show Boys And Girls when the DJ revealed all.
Kay told a Royal Television Society (RTS) event that working with Evans on the primetime show was a “big learning curve” and he was given only a few hours to learn his script.
He said: “It’s the most nerve-wracking thing to be on live telly... I hit my mark and nothing came out. I stood there thinking I know it begins ‘Hello and welcome to Boys And Girls’. So I said that and literally this whole script vommed from my mouth and I couldn’t stop talking.
“And then Evans had taken all his clothes off.
“He said ‘You didn’t bat an eyelid when I jumped across naked - that proves you know the show’.”
Meanwhile, the 40-year-old has revealed he is a bit of a romantic and loves to spoil his wife of 10 years, Tess Daly, with cheeky treats every so often.
He told Now magazine: “They’ve been very special and gone down well.
“I think it’s important to pluck at the heartstrings every now and again and spring something out of the blue, even if it’s just flowers. Or if you’re in that frame of mind, a bit of Victoria’s Secret.
“Tess is so good to me, so she deserves it. She will always treat me,’ says Vernon. ‘Like getting me a vanilla slice from my favourite bakers, I think that’s romantic. I never run out of things that I like. She will always make sure I have exactly what I need.”
The couple clearly make time for each other and love nothing more than cosying up and having a chat in front of the box.
He said: “We just do what everyone else does. Watch TV, have a bottle of wine and put the world to rights. Tess would probably complain there is too much sport on telly, but that’s standard. We make sure we talk. When I see Tess on the telly looking stunning I think, “That woman is coming home to me. I like that. That makes my heart beat faster.”
