THERE are many things which make Wigan Youth Zone tick.
From the dedicated staff to the wide range of activities on offer throughout the facility.
But one of the most important factors is, without doubt, the volunteers. Those kind-hearted people who give up their time for free are essential to the club performing to the best of its ability.
Since opening last June, the volunteers have played a vital role in the Youth Zone’s success and with more exciting things planned throughout 2014, it is hoped that even more will sign up.
Volunteer co-ordinator Selina Whitty, said: “We are always looking to recruit more. They are vital to the Youth Zone and all come from different backgrounds and are all generating ideas to help the place get even better.
“The ones we have got have surpassed my expectations by some distance and the staff are really benefiting from having them here.
“We try and ensure that our volunteers get something out of it too. We have a got a link up with the college for volunteers to get on courses.”
Staff at the Youth Zone are all of the same opinion when it comes to volunteers, speaking about how integral they are to the day-to-day running.
Lauren Beswick from the music department said: “We just couldn’t do what we do without them, they are amazing.
“Without wanting to single anyone out, the work they do and responsibilities they take on is brilliant.
“They all love coming to work here too. We have a fantastic team, I really don’t know what we’d do without them.”
Wigan Youth Zone is actively looking to recruit more volunteers to help in various areas at times which suit them.
Anybody interested, who is over 16, can download an application from www.wiganyouthzone.org.
They would then attend an informal chat and go through training before starting work.
