A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after a serious crash on the M6.

The 36-year-old man was travelling along the motorway but crashed onto the entry slip road at junction 25, closing the slip road and one lane of the M6 southbound at around 2.30pm this afternoon, Sunday.

Fire crews from Wigan and Leigh attended the incident and cut the male from the car, which had ended up on its side.

The man, who was on his way to work, was taken to Salford Royal Hospital by air ambulance. His condition is unknown.

All three lanes of the motorway were closed for a time while the air ambulance landed, causing traffic to back up to junction 27, Gathurst.

All lanes are now open.
