TV star Alesha Dixon will be brightening up Wigan this festive season after being unveiled as the star of the 2015 Wigan’s Christmas lights switch-on.
The singer, model and presenter will kick off this year’s festive celebrations as she guests at the much-anticipated Market Place party.
I’m hoping to see a bigger crowd there than ever beforeJohn Sanson, Grand Arcade manager
Alesha will greet revellers at the event on Thursday November 12 starting at 4.30pm until 7.30pm.
And the 37-year-old former Miss-Teeq singer will be joined by Britain’s Got Talent showstopper and Standish’s very own Henry Gallagher as well as Markus Feehily and Wigan Warriors players.
Wigan is the first appearance Alesha will make as she goes on to switch on Preston’s lights two days later.
The huge event will be followed by numerous celebrations over the week including Santa’s Christmas Parade on Sunday November 15.
This will feature guest of honour, Santa and his reindeers, starting at Mesnes Park at 1pm and ending at Market Place at 1.30pm, where CITV host Emma Nowell will be onstage, hosting a line-up of fun-tastic family entertainment until 4pm.
Lynda Kenyon, The Galleries Shopping Centre administrator, said: “The Wigan Christmas Cracker event is a highlight for the Wigan community every year and 2015 promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Alesha is a mainstay of Saturday night TV following her winning BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing then becoming a judge on the programme before switching over to ITV alongside Simon Cowell to take a judges’ seat on Britain’s Got Talent.
She originally came into the public eye in Mis-teeq before going it alone. She has racked up an impressive seven top 10 singles and released two platinum-selling albums. Her new album Do It For Love is set for imminent release.
John Sanson, Centre Manager of the Grand Arcade, continued: “We are so pleased to have Wigan and Leigh College sponsor the event this year and with our fantastic head line act Alesha Dixon as well as popular local performer Henry Gallagher, we are sure that the entertainment we have planned will be enjoyed by families, young and old – with something for everyone!”
Coun David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, added: “This is a fantastic line-up for the Wigan Christmas lights switch on and I’m sure it will be very popular for people of all ages.
“The annual lights switch on is a great opportunity to showcase the excellent variety of shops and markets we have in Wigan.
“I hope lots of people get down to the Christmas events in Wigan and Leigh and enjoy doing their Christmas shopping in their local town centres.”
The activity is brought to the community by Wigan Council, The Galleries Shopping Centre, Grand Arcade and Wigan and Leigh College.
