Detective Inspector Richard Thompson, from GMP’s Wigan borough, said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation, so we are not clear on exactly what happened.

“We don’t know how he came to suffer the injuries he has and it’s our priority to get to the bottom of this.

“This man is currently fighting for his life and our thoughts remain with his loved ones.

“CCTV is currently being reviewed and we want to provide his family with the answers they deserve.

“I would urge anyone who was in the bar or might have seen something to please call us.

“You might think it’s really small or insignificant but it could really help us piece together the events of the night.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 161 of 12 May 2017.
