A MAN has appeared in court on an arson charge following a fire at a Wigan home.

Michael Owen appeared before magistrates today (Wednesday) and was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on April 21.

The charge follows an incident on Ince Green Lane at around 11pm on Monday when fire crews were called to a fire.

They found a sofa well alight in the living area. Three engines attended the scene and managed to contain the flames.

It was initially feared that there were two people trapped inside but firefighters reported that it was in fact empty upon their arrival and, as a result, no-one was injured.

The sofa was destroyed while there was also significant damage to the walls and ceiling in the mid-terrace house.

Neighbours contacted the emergency services when they saw a fire had started.

Police were also called to the scene and opened an arson investigation.

They confirmed that 32-year-old Owen was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life shortly afterwards.

He was then charged on Tuesday before his court appearance yesterday.
