MORE than 100 council-owned buildings in Wigan contain asbestos.

Some of the borough’s most famous landmarks including Haigh Hall, The Galleries, Wigan Town Hall and scores of public properties are on a council list of buildings containing the deadly material.

Following a Freedom of Information request to Wigan Council, it was revealed that 110 council owned buildings are on an Asbestos Register listing corporate buildings which contain some asbestos within them.

If asbestos is damaged then the fibres can be released and breathed in.

A large exposure can cause mesothelioma.

Martin Wright, head of property and assets at Wigan Council, says: “We have our own council team who are responsible for carrying out asbestos surveys and monitoring in accordance with the relevant legislation and regulations – namely the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSG 264.

“We take this process extremely seriously, as the law dictates we should.”
