Assault on young mother

A MAN sat beside a young mum at a bus station and made offensive remarks about the size of her breasts.

Ashley Paul Shaw then tried to reach into her blouse and started gripping her so tightly she was scared she would have to let go of her baby’s pram.

The 25 year old told police called in by the victim Beth Ann Johnson that he had known her for 13 years and he was “only joking”.

But Wigan and Leigh Magistrates decided that it was no laughing matter - Shaw pleaded guilty to assaulting Ms Johnson - and was given a three month long prison sentence suspended for 12 months. He was also given a year long probation supervision order and told to pay £280 in compensation and costs.

Colin Rawson, defending, said that Shaw suffered from epilepsy and sometimes unwisely used alcohol which, when combined with his medication, affected his standards of behaviour.

He said: “He tried to be friendly to the young woman who had known for a large number of years but clearly he has difficulties in reading certain social situations.”
