Highways officers attended up to nine collisions in the region before breakfast-time as heavy rain and snow made conditions treacherous.

A vehicle was on its side on the southbound carriageway of the M61 between Chorley and the Macron Stadium near Bolton, while another was reported to have careered off the motorway and up an embankment in the same area.

And police reported debris on the northbound carriageway of the M61 near to junction 6.

A spokesperson for the North West Motorway Police said the weather was causing problems and urged drivers to “please alter your driving accordingly and slow down.”
